All is Fair in Love and Gardening
All is Fair in Love and Gardening Go ahead: say what you’re thinking. The garden
looks terrible, horrible, like it had a good-for-nothing day,
or year, or decade.
I tried. I watered
the lilies. I trimmed
the bushes. I sprayed
the weeds diligently, religiously.
My plants died nonetheless.
Every flower wilted before it bloomed,
every tree hollow with pests,
every blade of grass colored like dust.
I wish I could blame someone
Bast
Bast We found a dead cat
in a dead man’s shed.
The hoarder’s paradise
dusty, dilapidated, downright dangerous.
Wear your masks
wear your gloves
steel your soul for the terror within.
Perhaps your efforts will be rewarded with
treasures unseen.
Work quickly –
move the tools,
stack the books,
empty the shed box-by-box.
Maybe we could sell some of th – OMFG IS THAT A CAT
Bent into a right angle by a fallen book or box,
Observations from Tranquility Base
Observations from Tranquility Base A boy takes flight, flapping his
wings of wax, caring not
for the cries of his father, soaring high
into radiant beams,
unmoored in an ocean of sunlight.
Attention mechanisms click into divine understanding,
God does not forgive idolatry,
for what becomes of divinity when it reveals itself in icons?
Query, key, value,
matrices hallucinating,
let epsilon be the difference,
take the limit until you disappear,
The Athens Dispatch
The Athens Dispatch - A Tour of Abandoned Places and People It takes a certain amount of pretension to name a middle-of-nowhere patch of hills after the birthplace of democracy. In Athens, GA, the overwhelming emotion is a dull sense of boredom, but in all fairness, that is the overwhelming emotion for most places in Georgia. Long periods of nothingness punctuated by the occasional happening. Putting my cynicism aside, I would like to write the first and only issue of the Athens Dispatch1.
The Effects of the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program on Nutrient Demand – Evidence from The National Food Acquisition and Purchase Survey (FoodAPS)
The Effects of the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program on Nutrient Demand – Evidence from The National Food Acquisition and Purchase Survey (FoodAPS) The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal program that provides food assistance to low-income individuals and families. This study examines the impact of SNAP benefits on the diversity and quality of participants' diets using data from the National Food Acquisition and Purchase Survey (FoodAPS)1. Our findings suggest that SNAP benefits moderately increase the diversity and quality of participants' diets but still contribute to unhealthy overconsumption of calories.
Keynes and The Keynesians
Keynes and The Keynesians Introduction Keynesianism as an ideology oftentimes represents not the economic philosophy of John Maynard Keynes but rather “the policies of the Keynesians.” The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money and its interpretations have been debated since it was published in 1936. Of these, Hick’s neoclassical synthesis model, the IS-LM, has been argued almost as much as The General Theory itself.
Keynes’s attitudes toward the IS-LM apparatus are of little consequence to those who consider themselves Keynesians or to those who vehemently oppose the supposed Keynesians.
Our Economic Growth Delusion
Our Economic Growth Delusion Inspired by David Pilling’s Book, The Growth Delusion
Last week the United States economy had a second consecutive quarter of GDP decline. Some are adamant that we’re in a recession, others say not yet. Everyone agrees on one thing - growth would be much preferred, but should it?
Prayer at the altar of economic growth has transcended party lines since the dawn of the 20th century. Growth is the mantra of the modern world.
The Rift in The Indian LGBTQ+ Movement
The Rift in The Indian LGBTQ+ Movement As the gavel falls on a September morning, hundreds of thousands of Indians flood the streets in joy. Section 377, the legal justification for violence and discrimination against people who identify with non-normative sexualities and genders has been scrapped by the supreme court. Some see the fall of section 377 as the light at the end of a long dark tunnel, but such optimism is not universal throughout the country.
Cosmopolitanism in 'A Nostalgists Map of America'
Cosmopolitanism in “A Nostalgists Map of America” Human institutions have long operated within defined boundaries, but the last few decades have seen the dramatic fading of borders. Banking, military, research; all have grown into large global institutions. Cosmopolitanism has permeated into everyday life and identity, but it has consequences. Some scholars argue that cosmopolitanism is the only effective way to combat global issues while others push back against inevitable cultural erasure.
